When Kenneth Branagh announced the formation of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company in April 2015, the West End was understandably buzzing with excitement. The last time Branagh had graced the boards in London, he won the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for the title role in Ivanov. Now back with a series of plays in which he combines his gift for acting with an established directing career, the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company includes young and old performers alike and is drawing some of the very best in British talent to the Garrick Theatre for the next year. Kicking off the series with The Winter’s Tale, Branagh has brought one of the West End’s elite, Judi Dench, back to the stage.

This weekend was one of the pivotal awards weekends in the theatre calendar, with the stars of the West End hitting the red carpet to celebrate the best of theatre, dance and opera that London had to offer. The 39th Lawrence Olivier Awards took place on Sunday 12th April at the Royal Opera House and as ever there were some expected wins for the year’s most popular productions but also some surprises as well deserved dark horses crept up unawares.

LBO Review: Sunny Afternoon

“It’s all about the atmosphere” says the lead character Ray Davies (John Dagleish) just before the last (and best) song of this particular musical. And he’s not wrong. But whilst most of the audience was up on their feet dancing and singing along, I was sat at a table wondering why I wasn’t doing the same. The atmosphere for me was lacking in this production, I couldn’t help but think that it came up short against other jukebox musicals in the West End at the moment (Jersey Boys is my gold standard in this category).
