Edinburgh Festival Spotlight: Trashed

Edinburgh Festival Spotlight: Trashed

To find out more about Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 and the spotlights, please see the introductory article.

Next up in our Spotlight feature is Trashed, which plays Edinburgh Festival until 27 August 2017. I caught up with director and actor David William Bryan:

Describe your show in three words.

A beautiful mess.

Is this your first Edinburgh Fringe performance experience?

We’re super excited about Trashed. It was a huge surprise that our London preview sold so well and wee’re happy we’ve kept the momentum going up in Edinburgh!

Who else are you most looking forward to seeing while at the Fringe?

We’re big fans of Laughing Stock, so we can’t wait to see them again. Also, BRUCE!

How do you feel to be performing at Underbelly Cowgate?

Honoured. With it being our first Edinburgh, we’re really pleased to be at one of the most prestigious venues (Underbelly).

Who or what are your inspirations?

Honestly, I don’t feel like we have a choice. We both get up in the morning and it’s all we can think about. If we weren’t doing this, I don’t know what we’d do. We’re super passionate about producing high quality theatre that’s accessible to everyone.

Acting-wise, having trained at the Stella Adler Studio in New York, I’m keen to bring that technique to my work when performing. Creating our own work allows me to do that.

Writing-wise, Sascha Moorewrites about characters and life events you wouldn’t necessarily expect to see on stage. Her aim is to create characters that non-traditional theatre-goers can identify with, but most importantly characters that appear real – not stylised caricatures.

What is your secret to surviving the intense, fast pace of the fringe?

It’s our first time up there, so we’re just going to try and stay fit and healthy so we can give the show our all every day. It’s incredibly physical, so I’m sure there will be aches and pains along the way, but nothing a few ice baths won’t remedy.

What are the future plans for your show?

Well we were offered a London run of the play a couple of months ago, which we turned down to do Edinburgh. So hopefully we’ll get another offer afterwards. We’d also love to tour. All depends how the show is received really.

What is the best production you have seen this year – can be any genre, style, in any theatre or performance space?

The best thing I’ve seen on stage this year was a work in progress run of a new project from Lewis Doherty from Laughing Stock. It was at the Vaults festival. It was essentially a whole action movie on stage in which he played about eighty different characters. It was mind-blowingly good. I can’t wait for the polished version!

Is there anything else you want to highlight about your show/ theatre company/ production?

Essentially, Trashed is the story of an alcoholic bin man hiding out on a fly-tipping site and will probably really make you want a drink. Or make you never want to drink again. This show took three years to make and we can’t wait to show everyone.
