Next up in our Spotlight feature is Wet Bread, which plays Festival 47 from 10 July 2017 at 20:00. I caught up with director Tom Latter:
Describe your show in three words.
Left-wing activism satire.
Tell us a bit more about your theatre company.
Sheer Drop develop and produce new writing by British playwrights, with a particular focus on writers (of any age) at an early stage of their careers. We are drawn to plays which tackle the big issues of modern Britain with humour and humanity – drama which makes you think, melts your heart and tickles your funny bone all at once.
Is this your first time at the King’s Head?
Sure is and we’re very excited, naturally! The King’s Head team came to see our run at the Brighton Fringe in May and loved it so much they offered us a slot, and we’re delighted to be part of Festival47.
Who else in the festival programme are you most excited about?
Fall of Duty by Behind the Lines – a fantastic Brighton-based company whose work is very touching.
What is your inspiration to continue making theatre?
The state of Britain today is a constant inspiration, but first and foremost we are driven to entertain people. Hearing an audience laugh for most of the hour-long show is the main aim, and if they leave with a slightly new perspective on themselves and the world then so much the better.
What are the future plans and dreams for your show?
We’d love to share the show with a wide range of audiences in different places, people with different political persuasions to what we see on our Facebook feeds every day. The show is political but its focus is not on what political beliefs are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ but on how we hold and argue those beliefs – if anything it’s primary target is left-wing hypocrites preaching tolerance while actually being very judgemental of anyone who disagrees with them.
What is the best production you have seen this year – can be any genre, style, in any theatre or performance space?
Cheek By Jowl’s Winter’s Tale was pretty special – full of energy and verve.
Is there anything else you want to highlight about your show?
Wet Bread is a one-woman multi-character show written entirely in dialogue – the idea of which could be off-putting if it weren’t for how fantastic our solo performer Morag Sims is.
