News: Olivier Awards 2017 Round-Up

Last night, on 9 April, the Royal Albert Hall played host to the biggest awards ceremony in the theatre calendar, the 41st Olivier Awards.

Theatre stars, celebrity giants and musical legends alike graced the red carpet for this year’s Olivier Awards ceremony. But it was Harry Potter and The Cursed Child that swooped the board, winning a record-breaking 9 awards out of 11 nominations. The previous record of was jointly held by Matilda The Musical and The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, which walked away in 2012 and 2013 respectively with 7 awards each.

Four other shows were multiple award winners as well – DreamgirlsGroundhog DayThe Red Shoes and Yerma all collected 2 awards each.

Individual winners included Adam J Bernard, Anthony BoyleAmber Riley, Andy KarlBillie Piper, Jamie ParkerJohn Tiffany, Matthew Bourne, Noma Dumezweni and Rebecca Trehearn.

The Society Special Award this year was given to Kenneth Branagh, who has recently left the West End scene after his newly formed Theatre Company took over the Garrick Theatre for just under 2 years with 6 productions.
