One of London’s leading awards in the theatre calendar, The Offies Finalists were revealed via Twitter on Sunday 5 February.
After hours of deliberation, a panel of assessors and judges whittled down the year’s nominations to a small selection of shortlisted finalists after viewing over 400 productions in over 100 theatres throughout 2016. The Offies awards aims to recognise and celebrate the work of independent theatres across London, raising the profile of new theatre talent and introducing the winners to experts at the heart of the industry who can guide their next steps in the coming year.
The awards also celebrates the 10th anniversary year of Off West End, originally created by Sofie Mason, Kevin Nicholas and Diana Jervis-Read to celebrate the full spectrum of Off West End theatres and to draw increasing numbers of the general public into the heady darkness and dangerous passion of these alternative powerhouses. The winners this year will be announced over Twitter by Sir Patrick Stewart on Sunday 26 February 2017 from 5pm onwards, before the Oscars ceremony.
This year, Southwark Playhouse racked up the most nominations, scoring 9 in total for new musicals such as Grey Gardens and Toxic Avenger. The newly refurbished Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond was close behind with 8 shortlisted for productions such as Sheppey and The Rolling Stone.
